Years K - 2  Foundational Years

The early years of education lays the foundation for your child’s journey of life long learning.

Starting “big” school is such an exciting time for you and your child. At Northcross, we believe that a positive school experience in the early years of education lays the foundation for your child’s journey of life-long learning. Our teachers are committed to establishing a safe, caring and nurturing environment for your child where they can grow and develop to reach their full potential academically, physically, socially and spiritually.

In K-2, we concentrate on teaching your child the necessary skills in order to become both literate and numerate. The journey of learning to read and write is a stimulating yet complex one. The Spalding Method introduces the sounds that make words (phonograms) through a multi-sensory approach with precise instruction in handwriting. The consolidation of knowledge is strengthened as the students use these sounds when writing words, sentences and paragraphs as they prepare for future writing tasks.

The early years of education lays the foundation for your child’s journey of life-long learning.

The learning process differs from one child to another. To cater for the different stages of learning, students will work both independently and in groups in order to best meet students at their point of need and understanding. Students are taught necessary skills through a hands-on approach with an emphasis on teaching concepts and strategies that will support their future learning.

We see this journey in the foundational years as a partnership with parents, guiding and encouraging each child to confidently embrace their God-given gifts, talents and potential.

Years 3 – 4 is a dynamic time of learning for students. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a range of activities aimed at developing the whole child.

Students are streamed for Mathematics classes to allow teachers to best cater for their needs. During these years, students are in the process of progressing from an almost total reliance on concrete operational learning to experiences where they are encouraged to engage in learning that involves abstract thoughts and concepts.

Northcross uses the Spalding Method to teach students spelling skills and cursive handwriting. Students continue to learn to write a range of text types, which often require them do to research or publish their work on electronic devices, such as Thinkpads or iPads. Reading Groups within the class use a variety of texts and novels to explore words, themes and develop comprehension skills.

In Term 2, all of year 3 – 4 go on a three day Camp where they participate in many exciting activities. The focus themes for the Camp include developing resilience and independent living skills. Year 3 marks the time when students can try out for various sporting team and ‘gala’ days against other schools.

The teachers partner with the students to help develop their relationship with Jesus. Through daily class devotions and Biblical Studies lessons, students study the Bible, learn how to apply these truths to their lives and develop a lifestyle of worship so that they may be bright shining lights to all those around them.

Northcross is committed to equipping each student with skills for life. Middle School is an important stage in our school catering for students in Years 5 and 6 as they prepare to transition from Primary School to High School.

The focus of Middle School is to:
• provide quality teaching programs that engage students
• promote learning and develop independence within a supportive environment
• allow students to become active, flexible and responsible learners.

The classroom teacher is responsible for the majority of subjects taught, including English, Science & Technology, Biblical Studies, Human Society & Its Environment (HSIE), Dance, Drama, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Spelling and Mathematics is streamed across four ability based classes as this allows the students to work at a pace and a depth that suits their learning needs.

A strong pastoral care team ensures that every student is personally cared for and supported through this transitional period of life. The classroom teacher is integral to a student’s pastoral care and is supported by the Middle School Coordinator, School Chaplain and Learning Support staff.

Every student undertakes a leadership development program. In addition to this there are opportunities to become student leaders in a range of positions across the school.

There is a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities available for our students including choir, dance, debating, public speaking, music and sport.

We are proud of the achievements of our students and know that as they complete their Middle School years at Northcross, they are well prepared for their education at secondary school and beyond as they endeavour to become the person God has created them to be.
