This is what we do

As a registered school with the NSW Board of Studies, Northcross Christian School teaches NSW Syllabus outcomes for each of the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) K-6 within a biblical context. We recognise that each student learns differently. In response, we provide dynamic, interactive and varied learning experiences in every classroom. This may include teacher-directed instruction, child-centred lessons, group work or whole class activities. We pursue academic excellence while integrating a biblical perspective across the curriculum. We want each child to have opportunities to excel, reaching their potential through a well-rounded education that develops the whole child.

Northcross uses the Spalding Method for teaching literacy to students in Kindergarten to Year 6. This phonemic method teaches the foundational skills of reading and writing through precise handwriting instruction, word dictation and explicit grammar lessons.

Mathematics is taught through hands on activities which are reinforced in written tasks. Students are taught a variety of strategies to solve mathematical problems. Drill in quick recall of number facts enables our students to work confidently with numbers and problems.

Students are taught Science and Technology as well as Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) topics from a Christian world view. Our students learn through a variety of instruction including whole class learning, small group tasks, as well as individual research and investigation.

Curriculum comment

The Personal Development/Health and Physical Education program promotes healthy lifestyle choices developing respect and appreciation for us as part of God’s creation, with particular relevance to the human body, relationships and safety issues. All students are taught skills and strategies for a variety of sports and given opportunity to participate in School carnivals, inter-school carnivals and gala days.

Northcross offers students learning experiences in the Creative Arts. Music, Dance and Drama are taught as part of the core curriculum. Students are given opportunity to perform in weekly assemblies, whole school events, class performances and whole school musicals. Visual Arts skills are taught to all students to enable specific skill development across K-6.

In addition to the KLAs, we offer a Biblical Studies Curriculum to the students through Bible teaching, devotions and assembly times.

Support is offered to students who are newer to the English Language (ESL) to improve their skills in conversation, reading and writing of English.

We understand that all students learn at different rates and in varying styles. Northcross offers a Learning Support program to give additional instruction to those students who have difficulty in Literacy and Numeracy. We also provide Enrichment groups for students who excel in Literacy, Numeracy, Problem Solving and Science and Technology.
